The Grand Canal

One of my favorite parts of Hangzhou is the Grand Canal. I have often walked sections of the canal since it is not far from my apartment. The views along the canal are ever-changing. Cruise boats and barges share the water. Under the bridges older women dance and pairs of couples set up tables to play cards and mah-jong.

I never learned about the Grand Canal in school; American students should study this ancient marvel. It winds from Beijing to Hangzhou and dates back to the 5th century BC.
